Anywhere between £200 and £100,000.
Wow! That’s a bit of a wide gulf. Why?
1) For example; a one-page website, like a c.v or a call to action for a charity – £200.
2) A multi-page bed and breakfast website £300 – £500, depending on the work needed (content writing etc).
3) A hotel website with a booking system – £1,000.
4) A fully functioning licenced online casino with games as good as Ladbrokes; £20,000 – £100,000, depending on where you will operate and the commission rates you decide to game providers.
So, there is no one-size-fits-all pricing, and anybody who says differently is as mad as a box of frogs.
It takes time to create something on a website, and this is where people generally get confused when a developer charges fees. For example, imagine this website is a client website, who calls me, “Andy, can you create a section on the webpage ‘How much is a website in the UK‘. I want a paragraph of around 100 words and a suitable image”
Three actions will decide on how much I charge:
The steps to creating the section above:
If the client provided content and image, it would take 30 minutes. But, if I had to write the content and make a similar image, it could be another hour. Therefore, the cost of the above section is either £20 or £60 (mates rates).
You will see advertisements on TV for website builders such as WIX. If I see a website built by WIX, I think it is a very basic site, I certainly would not trust my information or link with it.
I paid a retainer for 4 years to a web designer at £200 per month, he would build the website, maintain it, host it on his servers and arrange email. However, when I had a problem with the websites, I may not have been able to contact him immediately. In time, I learnt the basics. Today, I can create a licensed online casino with live dealer games. A website is only limited to the time you put into it. As I stated above, time is money.
This whole page took me 3 hours. And, the reason I did it, is because a friend of a friend asked about cost (not neccessarily me doing the build). Knowing that they only require a basic website, I said £300. Rather than bite my hand off, they thanked me and went away to think about it. However, if they would have asked one of the website builders on the island, the price would start at £500. And, I realized that this was not the first time I had been asked the same question, so I thought I would explain the basics of a website build here, and next time just provide a link to this page.
Your domain name is your website’s address on the internet. Like your digital storefront. You can choose one that reflects you business type, your business name, your brand. For example; you have a new business cleaning patios on the Isle of Wight. Therefore, it would be a good idea to have a webiste name that explains this.
Search for a domain name on a hosting service such as Ionos, and buy one that is available. For example, I have just gone to my online Ionos account and chose the name www.IOWPatioCleaning.co.uk. It cost me £4 and every year I will need to pay a £10 fee to keep it legally registered in my name and hosted on Ionos.
Web hosting is a service where your website operates, it stores your website’s data (text, images, videos). From these servers, people will access your website. You can own your servers in your home, but they can be expensive, and you need technical know-how to operate and maintain them.
There are many hosting companies and the cost can depend on the size of your website and how secure you want it. You can get hosting from £4 a month. I would charge a client £10 – £20 per month because my servers are very secure and the website can host its own images and videos and still remain fast to load. Once you have hosting, you attach your domain name to the servers.
If you are confident you can build the website yourself; go to your hosting provider, link your domain to WordPress. WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) that allows users to create and manage websites, blogs, and various other online content. There are others, but they require much more technical knowledge.
A webisite is made of many parts, the number of which will depend on the complexity of your site. Most of the component parts are called ‘plugins’. They are readily available, mostly free. Theme, web builder, security, anti-spam, header and footer builders, video players, image optimization etc. etc. Everything needs to be plugged in before you create the content.
Wireframing is a process of creating a skeletal structure or blueprint for your website. You should focus on the layout and where the content will go, rather than visual design and pretty colours. It’s a crucial step in the design process, allowing you to refine the structure and functionality.
